Dear Washington District 50 Staff Members and Parents, The safety of students and staff is our top priority. We are writing to inform you that we have been notified that a student at Beverly Manor School recently tested positive for Parvovirus B19. Administration contacted the Tazewell County Health Department and they recommended we pass along the information listed below to staff members and parents. (1) Parvovirus B19 commonly causes fifth disease and is not a reportable infectious disease. (2) Symptoms usually show up as a mild rash illness in children. Adults can also get infected with parvovirus B19 resulting in fifth disease too. Less common symptoms include painful or swollen joints, which is more common in adults. About two out of 10 people who get infected with the virus will have no symptoms. (3) The incubation period is 14 days, so parents should monitor their children for up to two weeks to see if they display any of the above listed symptoms. Based on information that the school has received from the family, we believe this particular child would have been able to transmit the virus sometime between December 30, 2019 and January 12, 2020, some of which would have been during winter break. Transmission is no longer an issue for this particular child. (4) Parvovirus B19 spreads, similar to a cold, when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread through blood or blood products. A pregnant woman who is infected with parvovirus B19 can pass the virus to her baby. Any pregnant woman who may have been exposed should contact their obstetrician or health care provider as soon as possible. (5) There is no vaccine or medicine that can prevent parvovirus B19 infection. You can reduce your chances of being infected or infecting others by (a) washing your hands often with soap and water, (b) covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, (c) not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, (d) avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and (e) staying home when you are sick. (6) The Tazewell County Health Department said to refer staff and parents to the CDC’s website for detailed information concerning Parvovirus B19 and Fifth Disease via the following link. https://www.cdc.gov/parvovirusb19/about-parvovirus.html Again, the safety of students and staff is our top priority. If you have additional questions, you may contact me at (309) 745-8914 or the Tazewell County Health Department at (309) 925-5511. Sincerely, Chad Allaman, Superintendent

Several students in Ms. Houlahan's 6th grade helped in a community service project by visiting our high traffic library and doing some tidying up for Mrs. Burmeister. It was great to see them lending a hand and donating some of their time for a good cause! Several of them wrote about their experience and how to help in other ways. Check it out below: I cleaned the library by cleaning the chairs and tables, dusting the book shelves and air vents. I felt great when I was done cleaning the library. I can help others by helping them in work, helping them by wrapping gifts, help them with something that they don’t know or don’t know it yet, help them if they are stuck on something, I can help them on anything if I know how to do it. By cleaning the house I am helping my mom and dad. --- What I did to help clean the library: I dusted and I did the lint roller, cleaned the tables and chairs. How I felt after I cleaned the library: I felt calm and happy. What other things I can do to help other people: I can help my parents, by being nice and help clean and giving them a gift. --- What I did to help clean the library: I cleaned the chairs, vents and dusted. How I felt after I cleaned the library: I felt good and proud of myself. What other things I can do to help other people: I can do the same thing I did in the library and more like, clean the windows when I’m at home, I can clean the wood in the house, I can clean my room and feed my pets. When I clean my house I help my mom. --- To clean the library I did the lint roller, Cleaned tables, cleaned chairs, and I also dusted shelves. After I cleaned the Library It felt Good helping someone That needed help cleaning. I can help more people, like my mom, to clean the house.

Beverly Manor Wildcats of the Month! We are proud of our first group of Wildcats for all their hard work in August. See why they were nominated below. Savannah Moore is always willing to help out others in the classroom whether it be with something they are working on or just being a good friend. She is always mindful of the rules and following directions, and she is always participating in classroom discussions. Anthony is a very hard worker and he is always helping out in the classroom. He is quiet, but always willing to help. LIlah always has a bright shining smile on when she walks into the room each morning. She is ready and willing to help not only me with anything I need within the classroom, but she helps her peers if they are not understanding something. Lilah is willing to remind her peers in a kind and respectful manner if they are not following our school and classroom expectations. Arriann is polite, respectful, and kind to her classmates. She is always doing what she is supposed to and on task. You can tell she has a love for learning and striving to be her best! Kadynce is truly one of Beverly Manor's C.A.T.S. She is always cooperative and responsible in daily activities. She treats her teachers with respect and coaches fellow students by example. Raquel is always helpful, works hard, and is respectful of other students and staff. Harley is very caring, helpful, a good listener, and respectful in or outside of the class. Haley always finds ways to help not only the teacher in the classroom but also her fellow students. When group work is assigned she takes the lead, makes sure that everyone in her group understands the work, and if they don't she takes the time to make sure they get it. Her grades are on point, she participates in class, and encourages others to do so. Lukas volunteers, is very polite, on task, friendly, and cooperative. Illyana is always very positive. WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS August 28, 2019 PRESS RELEASE On August 27, 2019 a handwritten note containing threatening language was discovered near the main entrance to Beverly Manor School in Washington, Illinois. The note was written on a stationary note card in what appeared to be the handwriting of a student. Officials at District 50 Schools commenced an investigation and contacted the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office upon discovery of the note. After a brief investigation, school officials were able to identify the student responsible. The middle school student admitted writing the note and expressed remorse for the misconduct. While it appears that the student did not intend to carry out the threat, the district and law enforcement take all threats seriously. School disciplinary consequences will be imposed. The matter has also been referred to the Tazewell County States Attorney’s Office for juvenile proceedings. School officials urge parents to discuss with their children the importance of telling an adult right away if they hear or witness anyone make a threat toward the school or anyone at school. In addition, parents should reinforce the District message to their children that serious consequences from the school and law enforcement await anyone making such threats. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
