Good morning District 50 Families, We wanted to remind you that as Quarter 1 comes to a close, we need "method of instruction" selections chosen for your child(ren) so we can best prepare for any changes. Please go to your Skyward account online (not the app) and you will see a tile called "Quarter 2 Method of Instruction" outlined in green for each child. Please make your selections for "In-Person" or "Remote" instruction for the 2nd quarter of the 2020-2021 School year there. The second quarter runs from Oct. 13th-Jan. 8th of '21. A reminder to make your selection by 11:59 pm today. This will provide our staff and administration with time to plan for any changes that may be necessary. REMINDER TO PARENTS AND FAMILIES... Tomorrow (Friday, September 11th) will be a Remote Learning Day, in which ALL students will learn from home. In addition, parents should plan for the remaining Fridays through January 8th to be Remote Learning Days, as well. We will communicate our final decision regarding that on Wednesday, September 16th. During Remote Learning Fridays, teachers will provide lessons for on-site learners to complete at home, extra time will be spent connecting with our full-time remote learners, and additional cleaning will be performed at both schools. As soon as masks are no longer required to be worn at school, our plan is to return to our regular schedules at John L. District 50 Families, We have heard from families about receiving emails from Skyward and where an email may be located. Here are a few things to check so you will consistently receive Skyward messages: 1. Click My Messages 2. Make sure you have an updated email address listed in Skyward. 3. Click the Settings Icon on the right side under the purple "My Messages" bar (next to the Hidden Messages icon). 4. Scroll through the list and select the messages you want emails for or select "Subscribe to All Emails" 5. Just a note that if you "Subscribe to All Emails" this will help you receive great info such as missing assignments, low or high score alerts/tests, and more. All you need to do is choose the settings you want emails for. We hope this helps. Yours truly, District 50 Wildcats

Follow the directions provided daily to self-certify your child as healthy and symptom free, then take a screenshot to share with the staff member to proceed straight into the building. *You will need a phone to show proof of your self-certification in the car lane or at the front door. Dear Parents and Guardians, In addition to our Wildcats Return Plan 2020-2021 that was recently shared with parents and staff, we are providing the information below to assist you with planning for the start of a new school year. We are committed to keeping our schools open when possible, and we appreciate your support in this effort. 1. HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN FOR CHILD CARE – School could be cancelled at any time for a variety of issues related to COVID-19. These may be short- or long-term closures. This does not mean we will close school at the drop-of-a-hat - we are committed to keeping our schools open when it is possible for us to do so. This is a heads-up, however, that similar to being in a hazardous winter weather pattern, school closures could come at any time, and with short notice. We will use our mass calling system and social media to notify parents when school closures occur. 2. MASK-UP ON BUSES AND IN SCHOOLS – We are serious about this! Face coverings are required for everyone entering a school bus, or a school building. Face coverings must remain on at all times while on buses and in buildings. The only exceptions are when students are being supervised during lunch, snack time, recess and/or outdoor P.E (while maintaining social distancing). Students who arrive to board buses or enter schools without a face covering, will be provided with a disposable face mask. Again, we look forward to the start of a new school year! Sincerely, Chad Allaman, Superintendent

Dear Wildcat Families, The IESA has sent out an updated statement regarding fall sports. It states that Baseball and Softball may begin to hold tryouts/practices on Monday, August 3rd. At this time we are asking our coaches to set a TENTATIVE tryout date/time on or after August 5th so that administration may discuss and plan for how to best move forward with the changed guidelines. We will send out communication next week with guidance and expectations for our Wildcat families. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process. Please be advised that sports physicals will still be required before an athlete is eligible to tryout. You may read the IESA's announcement and plan in its entirety at https://www.iesa.org/ Thank you! Jennifer Miller Athletic Director

Wildcat parents, As previously posted we are saddened by the IESA announcement to cancel the fall 2020 baseball and softball seasons. A decision on girl's basketball will be made in August. You can read the full release from the IESA below: The IESA Board of Directors held a special meeting on Thursday, July 23. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss fall sports and whether those activities could be held in accordance with the current limitations placed on schools and activities by the Illinois Department of Public Health. After much discussion, the Board unanimously approved to cancel the regular season and IESA state series in the sports of boys and girls golf, boys baseball, girls softball, and boys and girls cross-country for the 2020-21 school year. There are no plans to try and re-schedule the activities or conduct them later in the school year in part due to if and when high schools in Illinois play their contests. Girls softball practice was scheduled to start July 27. The baseball and cross-country seasons were scheduled to start August 3. The Board delayed any decision on girls basketball. The first day of girls basketball practice is scheduled for August 31. The Board will meet again in late August to make a decision regarding girls basketball. The Board did review and approve a plan submitted by the Speech Advisory Committee that allows schools to hold their own speech contest during the upcoming school year. Schools that participate in speech will receive information at a later date. No decisions regarding any other activities were made. We know that there will be many people within the school system who will applaud this decision and there will be many who will be strongly opposed. At the forefront of the Board decision is that the activities must be conducted within the current limitations that have been placed on the schools by the IDPH. In particular, the mandate that there can be no physical contact between athletes and that students must be socially distanced (6 ft. of separation) makes the administration and conduct of games and contests very difficult and in some cases impossible to adhere to the mandates. While there are plenty of youth league baseball and softball teams playing games and tournaments this summer, many are not adhering to the same stringent guidelines. Because summer leagues and travel ball are taking place, this may make the decision of the IESA Board of Directors seem odd. The difference is that schools will be held to the IDPH mandates and the youth summer contests are not. It would make little sense for IESA to move forward with these activities that would require schools to be in direct conflict with mandates by state agencies that have regulatory control over the schools. COVID-19 has changed the world. However, this decision is not the end of the world. It is not the news that most students and parents want. At the end of the day, we work with junior high and middle school students. They are not professional athletes; they are not college athletes; they are not even high school athletes. They will not be missing out on any college scholarships. These are mainly 12-14 year old kids who will have many more opportunities to participate (perhaps even later this school year in other activities). We recognize that athletics play a huge role in the lives of students. Activities, despite their importance in the development of students, can never take precedence over the health and safety of those same students as well as the health and safety of contest officials, game management, and parents/fans who attend contests. The IESA Board of Directors made a difficult decision but in the end they simply felt that there are too many unknowns to proceed safely at this level of play.

Dear 8th-grade parents/guardians, As we are approaching the end of the school year, we are starting to look ahead to summer school and the fall semester. I'm sure your student is excited to complete eighth grade and we are looking forward to seeing them as incoming freshmen. If your student is interested in enrolling in summer school, we are offering several courses online. Attached you will find detailed information about the dates for attendance, courses offered, fees, and how to register. It is important to consider your student's readiness for a condensed summer school schedule. This will be their first introduction to a high school course, and a full semester of material is covered in about five weeks. The courses are also offered online, so it is very important that students are motivated to participate remotely. If you are interested in enrolling for summer school, the registration will be available May 15 - May 25, 2020. If you have any questions about the courses offered or what to expect, please contact me or the school counselor assigned to your last name. We look forward to a successful summer school session and welcoming the incoming freshmen this fall. Sincerely, Karen Stevens WCHS Principal

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 provides the Secretary of Agriculture authority to approve a State agency plan for temporary emergency standards of eligibility and levels of benefits under the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. What does this mean? . . . Children ages 3 to 17 and ages 18 to 22 (if in high school), who have temporarily lost access to free or reduced price school meals due to the COVID-19 pandemic related school closures are eligible for Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) SNAP allotments equal to the (daily meal costs) x (number of school days in the month) $3.50 lunch + $2.20 breakfast = $5.70 daily meal cost per child. . . . All children that would receive a free or reduced price meal if school was in session, even if a district wide eligibility school, are eligible for P-EBT regardless of income or citizenship. . . . Active SNAP households do not need to apply for P-EBT benefits and do not need to be contacted about the benefit. Existing case information will be used to automatically issue benefits when appropriate. Here is the link to apply: https://abe.illinois.gov/abe/access/

We are happy to FINALLY announce the 2020 WCHS Color Guard Auditions!!! This year's auditions will be a brand new experience for all of us as we are moving to a virtual tryout. What does that mean? Well, all parts of the audition process will happen online. The routines will be taught via video recording and auditions will be submitted online as well. Beginning THIS Thursday, 4/16 through Saturday 4/18 we will be releasing roughly 1/3 of the dance and flag audition routines each morning. The routines will be "taught" in the video, similarly to how we would have taught them in person. On the final day we will also release videos of the full routines so you can practice right along with the choreographers. In addition, we will be holding virtual meetings with both choreographers so you can ask questions, clarify moves, etc. Then, beginning Sunday 4/19 we will post information on how you can submit your audition. We will accept audition recordings from Sunday 4/19 through Tuesday 4/21 at 9pm. Every effort will be made to select the team and post results by the following Sunday, 4/26, if not before. Please fill out the attached Google audition form so we can be sure we have names and emails for all students who will be submitting an audition. Note for students: this is a different form than those you may have filled out at Winter Rehearsals. EVERYONE who is trying out should fill out this form. If you are in need of a flag to use for the auditions, we will have a ONE TIME ONLY flag distribution. We have TENTATIVELY set this for this Thursday, 4/16 from 1pm-2pm in the circle drive at WCHS. All social distancing guidelines will be strictly followed and the equipment will be thoroughly sanitized prior to distribution. There is a section of the audition Google Form to fill out if you will need a flag. We are awaiting admin approval for the distribution date, so please check back to be sure of correct date and time. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to email Mrs. Brent at [email protected]. We know this is not an ideal situation, but we are looking forward to getting our team selected and moving towards the 2020 Marching season! Audition Form can be found here: https://forms.gle/qDy8p98MRwDmtoNy7

High Praise for our March Students of the Month! Check these kids out! Landen Dozard: He is respectful, kind, and a leader. Troy Cline: Troy's behavior has improved dramatically as has his grades in class. His attitude has improved as well. Hudson Heyder: Hudson is always cooperative, responsible and respectful. He works hard and always takes advantage of opportunities to improve and grow. Jordain Reardon: Jordain is consistently following classroom expectations. She stays on task and completes any work given to her promptly. She is a great leader in 7th grade. Maddie Irons: She is an example of the Wildcat Pledge in action. She goes above and beyond to help either myself or her classmates out. She looks to help and does not have to be told to help. She has really been a source of positiveness in the classroom. Taylor Stone: Taylor is an absolute joy to have in class. Her love for all of the academic subjects (especially math and writing) is contagious. She inspires me as a teacher to challenge my students to their highest ability. She craves to learn concepts well beyond her grade level. She even spends her free time asking for enrichment and to develop her writing piece (which has over 10,000 words!) Taylor is new to Beverly Manor this year, but you would never know it. She is a friend to many because of her trustworthiness and compassion. Taylor drives classroom discussions by posing thought-provoking questions and challenging us to think deeper. Go Taylor! Leigha Hunt: Leigha is a respectful, kind, and hard working student. She is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it. She is kind and inclusive to her friends. She is always willing to help me in the classroom whenever I may need it! Phoenix Tisdale: Phoenix is an exemplary student, friend, and person. He puts 100% into everything that he does and demonstrates all of the qualities we need in our world! Kevan Ingold: Kevan is always asking for ways to help around the classroom. Kevan has a great attitude and comes to school ready to learn each day! Kevan has straight A's and is excelling in his school work. Nick Jones: Nick is such a caring and sweet individual. He is always trying his best on his school work and has made great improvements on his STAR reading and math scores. Nick is rapidly improving in math and is a great participant in everyday lessons! He always comes to school with a positive attitude and is curious about many different topics we are covering in class.

Please know the health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We have been actively monitoring the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid-19). To date there are no reports of cases involving Coronavirus disease COVID-19 in our area. A fifth case of Coronavirus COVID-19 has been confirmed in Illinois and all individuals infected are from in or around Chicago. Since late January, our Regional Office of Education has been working to ensure timely and accurate information is provided to the districts they serve related to Coronavirus (Covid-19). As a result, they have created a Google Drive Folder to provide school superintendents with up-to-date information to assist them in making informed decisions for their respective districts (we have been receiving daily updates since this started). Also, starting next week (March 9th), they will be on a weekly call with the Tazewell County Health Department to remain informed of this ever-evolving situation and pass along updates to us. In addition, on March 12th the Regional Office of Education #53 and Public Health Administrators will host an informational meeting on Covid-19/Coronavirus for local school district administrators. We are grateful to our parents for promoting healthy habits at home with their children. Please keep reminding your children of these: (1) Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. (2) Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. (3) Avoid close contact with people who are sick. (4) Stay home when you are sick. (5) Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. (6) Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. We wish you all the best!

WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS March 6, 2020 PRESS RELEASE On March 5, 2020 a notebook containing a handwritten list of several pupils created by a Beverly Manor School student that threatened “revenge” against those on the list was turned in to Beverly Manor School administration. Upon learning about the list, administrators immediately commenced an investigation which included involvement of law enforcement. Based on our investigation, we were able to identify the student responsible, speak with the student at some length, and conclude that the student did not intend to carry out any threat. Nevertheless, such threats are not tolerated and appropriate steps are being taken to hold the responsible student accountable. Parents of students on the list were contacted by administration to inform them of the matter.

January Students of the Month @ Beverly Manor We are excited to announce our star students from January and their nomination reasons. I hope they enjoyed their candy bars! Emma Linn: Emma is a polite, respectful, organized, and responsible young woman. She will do anything for anyone. It is rare for an 8th grader to put aside any "social norms" and help any student who needs it. Elijah Eckart: Elijah is a kind, responsible student. He is very respectful to all staff and peers. He is attentive in class, helpful to his classmates, cheerful, and polite to teachers and staff members! Landin Ruff: All three teachers agree that he is a good choice. He is quiet and respectful, gets his work done, and is an ideal student. Jordan Phegley: Jordan is consistently following the classroom. She always does the right thing and is a constant helper in the classroom. Connor Wiese: He has great academic standing and shows model student qualities. Pierce Bernius: Pierce is new to Beverly Manor this year, and he has absolutely rocked 6th grade. Pierce works extremely hard every school day. His star test scores have skyrocketed, and his class grades reflect his dedication to his school work. Pierce asks for help when he needs it, always makes sure no one is left out, and asks for extra practice materials to take home. Even though the flu tried to get Pierce down, he won't let it! He stayed on top of all his school work and even did extra. Pierce makes me so proud to be his teacher! Julia Johnson: Julia is a very hard-working student who always gives 100%. She is the first to volunteer to help other students and the teacher no matter what that work may entail. She is a true leader to her peers and those around her. Julia always makes responsible decisions to better herself and her classmates. Austin McCoy: Austin is really good at staying focused on his school work and getting it done in a timely manner. He is always responsible and stays on top of making sure he always has everything turned in and it is his best work. He is always willing to help me out around the classroom and always is in a positive mood. He gets along with his peers well and doesn't have behavior issues with anyone. I know I can always count on him for being a good example for other students to follow. Rian McKinney: Rian is the sweetest, most helpful girl. She is always asking if she can do anything for me in the classroom. She is kind to everyone and gives her best effort on her work. Rylee Tisdale: Rylee is a hard worker and a very responsible student. She is a friend to all and always has a positive attitude!

Good morning Beverly Manor Guardians, Don’t forget that parents must use the drop off lane in the morning and pick up lane in the afternoon. There is no thru traffic (short cut drop off) from 7:30-8:05. During pick up, kids should meet you in the pick up lane away from the bus pick up. Traffic jams aren’t fun, but kids are our priority so safety trumps short cuts. Thank you!

Dear Washington District 50 Staff Members and Parents, The safety of students and staff is our top priority. We are writing to inform you that we have been notified that a student at Beverly Manor School recently tested positive for Parvovirus B19. Administration contacted the Tazewell County Health Department and they recommended we pass along the information listed below to staff members and parents. (1) Parvovirus B19 commonly causes fifth disease and is not a reportable infectious disease. (2) Symptoms usually show up as a mild rash illness in children. Adults can also get infected with parvovirus B19 resulting in fifth disease too. Less common symptoms include painful or swollen joints, which is more common in adults. About two out of 10 people who get infected with the virus will have no symptoms. (3) The incubation period is 14 days, so parents should monitor their children for up to two weeks to see if they display any of the above listed symptoms. Based on information that the school has received from the family, we believe this particular child would have been able to transmit the virus sometime between December 30, 2019 and January 12, 2020, some of which would have been during winter break. Transmission is no longer an issue for this particular child. (4) Parvovirus B19 spreads, similar to a cold, when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread through blood or blood products. A pregnant woman who is infected with parvovirus B19 can pass the virus to her baby. Any pregnant woman who may have been exposed should contact their obstetrician or health care provider as soon as possible. (5) There is no vaccine or medicine that can prevent parvovirus B19 infection. You can reduce your chances of being infected or infecting others by (a) washing your hands often with soap and water, (b) covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, (c) not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, (d) avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and (e) staying home when you are sick. (6) The Tazewell County Health Department said to refer staff and parents to the CDC’s website for detailed information concerning Parvovirus B19 and Fifth Disease via the following link. https://www.cdc.gov/parvovirusb19/about-parvovirus.html Again, the safety of students and staff is our top priority. If you have additional questions, you may contact me at (309) 745-8914 or the Tazewell County Health Department at (309) 925-5511. Sincerely, Chad Allaman, Superintendent

Good morning D50 Community, Calling all artists and creative minds! Please take a look at this unique opportunity from Google. They are hosting a Doodle for Google event with the theme of "I show kindness by..." and are inviting students to be creative and show ways that they can be kind. The contest opened Jan. 6th and goes through March 13, 2020. 54 students will be named winners from their state and five finalists will be flown to Google's headquarters where 4 will win a $5,000 scholarship and one student will win a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 Google for Education tech package for their school, and have their artwork placed on Google's homepage for a day.  We have some spectacular artists and this would be a great way to have some family fun in brainstorming an idea and have the possibility of major rewards! Let the creativity fly and show kindness!

Several students in Ms. Houlahan's 6th grade helped in a community service project by visiting our high traffic library and doing some tidying up for Mrs. Burmeister. It was great to see them lending a hand and donating some of their time for a good cause! Several of them wrote about their experience and how to help in other ways. Check it out below: I cleaned the library by cleaning the chairs and tables, dusting the book shelves and air vents. I felt great when I was done cleaning the library. I can help others by helping them in work, helping them by wrapping gifts, help them with something that they don’t know or don’t know it yet, help them if they are stuck on something, I can help them on anything if I know how to do it. By cleaning the house I am helping my mom and dad. --- What I did to help clean the library: I dusted and I did the lint roller, cleaned the tables and chairs. How I felt after I cleaned the library: I felt calm and happy. What other things I can do to help other people: I can help my parents, by being nice and help clean and giving them a gift. --- What I did to help clean the library: I cleaned the chairs, vents and dusted. How I felt after I cleaned the library: I felt good and proud of myself. What other things I can do to help other people: I can do the same thing I did in the library and more like, clean the windows when I’m at home, I can clean the wood in the house, I can clean my room and feed my pets. When I clean my house I help my mom. --- To clean the library I did the lint roller, Cleaned tables, cleaned chairs, and I also dusted shelves. After I cleaned the Library It felt Good helping someone That needed help cleaning. I can help more people, like my mom, to clean the house.

Mr. Sharp crafted his own song to motivate Beverly Manor students for success on the IAR test. After hearing student feedback and he is really searching for a shot at redemption as a singing celebrity. However, he is not a lyrical poet and is searching for help. So he is calling for all of the creative songwriters out there to to compose an IAR song for him to select and sing this year (with the background music in mind). If you need some inspiration, enjoy viewing last years video. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a_qoenj_8aEhj5PRYz0ryl2v6gQphkkn/view?usp=sharing Song lyrics can be submitted to Mr. Sharp up until January 10th, 2020! October Students of the Month! We are excited to present our 10 students of the month from October. (I promise we have ten, one is doing some hiding!). Read on to hear about our students and what great things they are doing to show Wildcat Pride. Morgan Carlyle: Morgan always comes to school ready to learn and in such a positive attitude that fills the room. Morgan has really come out of her shell this year and has made great improvements in both reading and math! She is a great helper around the room when I need a hand, and she never complains when given a task to complete. Charlie Meinders: He is always supportive of other students, participates in everything. He is so very kind and courteous. Austin Kaufmann: Austin does a very good job with working with others and helping them out if they need assistance. He always has a positive attitude and has not gotten in trouble in my class once this year. He is always asking to help me out in the classroom and never complains if I ask him to do something. He is a great friend to others and even goes above and beyond to make sure that everyone gets along and to keep others on track. Finn Johnson: Finn is a new student to Beverly Manor but has already proven to be an outstanding member of our student body. He is consistently cooperative and respectful to all of his teachers. His assignments are always completed and turned in on time. He received excellent scores on his report card for the first grading period. Finn is already becoming involved in extra activities such as the Media Club. He is well liked by his peers and has worked hard to form new friendships. Connor Wiese: Connor works hard on the things he does and is always willing to help out. Aleeya Wolf: Aleeya has done a wonderful job of coming to school everyday and being ready to learn! She has been extremely helpful! Olivia O'Connell: She is caring, helpful and respectful! Olivia is always on task, turns work in on time, and is always kind. Lexi Kuhn: Lexi is responsible, hard working, and polite. She always has a smile on her face and a kind word for others. Well done everyone! We are on the lookout for our November winners now.

Beverly Manor Wildcats of the Month! We are proud of our first group of Wildcats for all their hard work in August. See why they were nominated below. Savannah Moore is always willing to help out others in the classroom whether it be with something they are working on or just being a good friend. She is always mindful of the rules and following directions, and she is always participating in classroom discussions. Anthony is a very hard worker and he is always helping out in the classroom. He is quiet, but always willing to help. LIlah always has a bright shining smile on when she walks into the room each morning. She is ready and willing to help not only me with anything I need within the classroom, but she helps her peers if they are not understanding something. Lilah is willing to remind her peers in a kind and respectful manner if they are not following our school and classroom expectations. Arriann is polite, respectful, and kind to her classmates. She is always doing what she is supposed to and on task. You can tell she has a love for learning and striving to be her best! Kadynce is truly one of Beverly Manor's C.A.T.S. She is always cooperative and responsible in daily activities. She treats her teachers with respect and coaches fellow students by example. Raquel is always helpful, works hard, and is respectful of other students and staff. Harley is very caring, helpful, a good listener, and respectful in or outside of the class. Haley always finds ways to help not only the teacher in the classroom but also her fellow students. When group work is assigned she takes the lead, makes sure that everyone in her group understands the work, and if they don't she takes the time to make sure they get it. Her grades are on point, she participates in class, and encourages others to do so. Lukas volunteers, is very polite, on task, friendly, and cooperative. Illyana is always very positive. She is the first to follow directions and works very hard in the classroom. She is a joy to have in class.

WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS August 28, 2019 PRESS RELEASE On August 27, 2019 a handwritten note containing threatening language was discovered near the main entrance to Beverly Manor School in Washington, Illinois. The note was written on a stationary note card in what appeared to be the handwriting of a student. Officials at District 50 Schools commenced an investigation and contacted the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office upon discovery of the note. After a brief investigation, school officials were able to identify the student responsible. The middle school student admitted writing the note and expressed remorse for the misconduct. While it appears that the student did not intend to carry out the threat, the district and law enforcement take all threats seriously. School disciplinary consequences will be imposed. The matter has also been referred to the Tazewell County States Attorney’s Office for juvenile proceedings. School officials urge parents to discuss with their children the importance of telling an adult right away if they hear or witness anyone make a threat toward the school or anyone at school. In addition, parents should reinforce the District message to their children that serious consequences from the school and law enforcement await anyone making such threats. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
